Ep197 We Don’t Call Them Losses Anymore: Gary Ramo, EOS Implementer

· Matt Nettleton

Gary Ramo grew up in a military family, was born in London, spent his childhood in Hawaii, and later served himself. He figured out early that working for someone else wasn’t going to work. In this episode of the Default Profitable podcast, host Matt Nettleton sits down with Gary Ramo, a Certified EOS Implementer based in Hawaii who works with leadership teams in Hawaii, Indiana, and virtually. Gary has owned or run five different businesses—some that worked, some that didn’t. The first was a furniture business in southern Indiana that took off fast and then crashed because two guys in their late teens had money in the bank and no plan for what to do with it. He later ran a mortgage company that grew to 15 loan officers before the 2007 market collapse took it out, spent time in manufacturing, and tried the travel business on Kauai until a marketing partner undercut him. Around 2020 he stepped into a company as an EOS Integrator (the day-to-day operator, not the outside implementer). Watching the system actually work made him realize he wanted to spend his time helping other entrepreneurs do the parts of the business nobody teaches you.

Gary and Matt get into the difference between being a visionary and being the person who has to execute, why most business owners treat their company like “sell more widgets, make more money” until it gets exponentially more complicated, and the one thing Gary wishes first-time owners understood: figure out how much you can actually deliver with what you have right now, go sell enough to fill that capacity, and start planning the next capacity before you hit the wall. They talk about why healthy companies start with an owner who can say “I don’t know,” “I made a mistake,” or “I’m stuck,” why 90-day priorities only move the company if someone deliberately blocks time to work on them, and the sports-team reality that you need the right people in the right seats or you’ll spend your life micromanaging. Gary also shares what he tells people leaving big corporate jobs who assume they can just start their own thing: the safety blanket disappears, revenue has to show up, and you are not usually inventing a brand-new market.
